Mission Cheaply?

Joseph Keith

Mission Cheaply: miSHən/ ˈʧipli (v): Going somewhere for as little (money cost) as possible. All in the name of stewardship.

I love working on my car and the sense of accomplishment I have after fixing a check-engine light. But, I’m compulsively cheap when it comes to car parts. One time I bought cheap brake parts, which ended up turning a 2-hour job into a 12-hour day.

I love working with groups to send them on mission. But I’ve seen too many groups wanting to Mission Cheaply: Going somewhere (anywhere) for as little as possible, all in the name of stewardship. Perhaps this means choosing not to share a meal with the local missionary because you can save a few dollars off your bottom line by packing in your own food. Missionaries are often asked to perform miracles with a limited trip budget – and usually have to dip into their own support to make up the lack. People groups remain unreached because we could be “better stewards” of God’s resources by going to cheaper places.

Serving here at YMI has shown me the dangers of Mission Cheaply and the importance of doing Mission Differently. Here are some simple ways to avoid Mission Cheaply and how to Mission Differently instead:

1. Make sure you are a good steward not only of finances but also ministry needs. Don’t sacrifice long-term ministry impact for the sake of saving a few bucks. Commit to following God’s call for your group at your ministry site rather than simply meeting your bottom line.

2. Consider the needs of the missionary and the expenses they will incur as a result of your group. Make sure you leave the missionary supported and blessed - work with the missionary to make sure their ministry won’t suffer for your limited budget.

3. Don’t limit your reach due to cost. Are people groups remaining unreached because you’re obsessing over ticket costs? Benefit from YMI's experience in international travel - why reinvent the wheel?
